Representing generations of gamers, TIME's tech team put more than 150 contestants through a multi-step scoring process to compile a sample of the best game ideas spanning nearly four decades. Here are our picks for the 5 best video games of all time.

Borderlands 2 has elevated the excellent game to legendary. The original Borderlands grabbed the attention of gamers, seemingly out of nowhere, and its sequel took everything that made the great original and expanded it. From its perfect continuation of the Borderlands chest hunting tradition to its unmatched writing, Borderlands 2 remains the culmination of the Borderlands franchise. Borderlands 3 is packed with improvements over its predecessor The Pre-Sequel, but Borderlands 2 still can't be beat for its incredible levels, great DLC, and the series' best villain, Handsome Jack.

3. Dark Souls III

The extremely difficult, dark and difficult world of Dark Souls III is so influential that it has spawned a whole new vocabulary to describe the game. While the early Dark Souls is obviously the most revolutionary, Dark Souls III has such talent and skill. such sophistication, which makes it the best experience in the series. The game also features great graphics, excellent controls, hardware controller support, tons of content to play, tons of cars to unlock, and a variety of racing styles. The game is a bit pricey and lacks a few things that racing fans tend to like, but otherwise it's one of the best racing experiences on the Play Store. Our only real complaint is the lack of updates.
